 responsive web design

Seeing how mobile and tablet traffic is reaching 60% of overall traffic on our client sites , such as shown above, I thought it would be a good time to write another blog post that explains responsive web technology.

A responsive website is one that adapts itself to the screen size of the device it is being viewed on. Unlike mobile sites, a responsive website doesn’t care if you are on a desktop or a phone or what operating system you have. All it cares about is what's the width of your screen. The advantage of this approach is that you need only one website which is not the case with mobile sites that also require desktop versions. The disadvantage of a responsive site is that it can be slower than a mobile site due to its requirement to handle multiple screen sizes.

Imagine not having to carry your wallet.  I'm not talking about not carrying the cash.  I'm talking about not carrying the wallet at all.

Everything we have in our wallet can be replaced with a cellphone except for one little detail - banks.   The credit card companies don’t want us to replace the plastic. The reason for this is if we were allowed to pay with our cellphones then the transfer fees could also go to the telecom companies instead of to just the credit card company.

But let’s not raise that now and allow ourselves to imagine a wallet free world.

In my last blog post I explored the idea of what mobile companies will do to keep current and competitive. As the low cost smart phones are getting increasingly close in features to those produced by the leading brands, Apple, Samsung, Nokia and others will have to keep innovating. In this issue we will discuss how cellphones can replace keys. A feature especially attractive to the skinny pants wearing crowd!

When was the last time you truly believed that your new phone was a major improvement from its predecessor? For me, it was when I upgraded from my Blackberry Pearl to Samsung Galaxy S. That was in 2010 and my current phone doesn’t do that much more than my first Android device. Therefore I am overdue to be excited about my phone again!

Whether it's Pay-Per-Click, Banner Ads, Pre-rolls, Mid-Rolls, Take-Overs, or whatever the other myriad of things you can do online are called, it can be summed up here as 'Online Advertising.'
Note:  This is different from Mobile advertising in a lot of ways, but there are some similarities too. It's also part of Social Media advertising, but there''s more to that too.
Yeah, it's a big deal.

Mobile TireThis blog takes me back to the winter of 2011 and a bad experience I had at a local tire shop. I have been purchasing tires from TireRack for several years now and really enjoy their service, variety of options, customer reviews, tire testing data and prices. When I got my new truck, I purchased the winter tires for it at TireRack. While I was purchasing the tires, I looked up a local installer and to my disappointment there were none. So, instead of having TireRack ship the tires to the installer, they had to ship them to me and I had to take them to a shop to install the tires.

One of our partners is fond of Albert Einstein’s expression: "Any technology that is distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced."

We recently completed a major website project for a great client, the RCMP Heritage Centre (rcmpheritagecentre.com), that to many people will seem to have its own magic.

This new site is much more interactive, user friendly, and heck, just plain better looking than the previous one.  The magic part of the site however, may be what you don't see - it was built as a 'responsive' website.

The explosion of smartphone and tablet use has created the need to build websites that can be responsive to a wide variety of screen sizes. The days of building a website and a mobile site are long gone.

The Heritage Centre's site was built to allow it to seamlessly move between several different layout sizes based on the device you are viewing it on.  You can demonstrate this by opening the site up in full size on a desktop then adjusting the size of the browswer window.  Watch how it adjusts the menu and layouts to fit the screen size.

Not any more...

I just had to comment on the recent Samsung vs iPhone ad. First let me disclose that I am on my second Samsung phone and seeing the new iPhone 5, will most likely be purchasing another Android phone. I guess disclosing this gives me a right to bash Samsung. If I was a comedian I would do a comedy skit on it.

Apps vs mobile clouds

A Case for Platform-Agnostic App Development

The part of my job I enjoy the most is analyzing where marketing is headed and the new technologies that are being developed for it. This information is invaluable to our customers’ and our own business. Recently, we have experienced the explosion of mobile devices. Apple and Android are using their apps (500,000 Apple, 400,000 Android) to lure consumers into choosing their platform. If I had it my way, I would scrap the “app war” and here is why.
