For years now I've had the tendency to bite off a bit more than I can chew and, somehow, manage to muster up the amount of dedication it takes to swallow it. This Fall I've taken on my biggest challenge yet and this time (to continue on with the somewhat awkward visual I've assembled) I'll be "eating" in front of a rather large crowd of people.

Despite the food visual I've given you, no, the challenge is not a pie-eating contest. I'm currently training four evenings a week, with nine other volunteers to compete against each other in a public charity boxing event for Regina Palliative Care called "Kiss the Canvas". Along with the training, I've made a commitment to raise $5,000 for RPCI through pledges, sponsorships, and fundraising events.

When was the last time you truly believed that your new phone was a major improvement from its predecessor? For me, it was when I upgraded from my Blackberry Pearl to Samsung Galaxy S. That was in 2010 and my current phone doesn’t do that much more than my first Android device. Therefore I am overdue to be excited about my phone again!

'Make sure you check out our Facebook Page!'

'Find us on Facebook'

'We're easy to find, just go to facebook.com/(BUSINESS NAME HERE)'

While I applaud the way businesses are diving into this new and exciting world of social media - which is a vital media layer these days - I got to wondering 'Is the entire 'Find us on Facebook' thing turning into the next '(PHONE NUMBER / ADDRESS)' of the advertising world?

When your company is called "Look Matters" you wind up setting the bar higher when it comes to first impressions. Luckily, we have a secret weapon.

Darla Toth's title is "Director of First Impressions" - but only because her natural humility would not allow her to accept the more accurate title of "Impresario".

It is the small details that matter and Darla does an amazing job ensuring our clients and our staff are surrounded by beauty and attention to detail.

Last weekend I was at my buddy’s house helping him finish his basement. It’s a common occurrence in my life, because my second love, after marketing and advertising, is home improvement. That was a joke. It was two straight nights of putting down laminate and, every five minutes, without fail, Matty would ask me “who took my Sharpie?” I would stare at him blankly, savour the moment of that puzzled look and ridiculous question, and remind him that it was on his ear.

Shirley Temple 2On Monday, September 30th, Looker Andrew Rathwell asked everyone to let our guard down, travel outside of our comfort zones and tackle an eight hour period of #NoEmail in his well written and perfectly planned blog.

The concept behind this initiave was really quite simple - relieve the constant (and at times overwhelming) pressure of e-mail overload and return to the days of human contact and interaction.  Dust off our phones, have face-to-face conversations and most importantly, get to know the people we interact with daily through the long lost art of physical conversation.

At 8AM on Thursday, October 3rd we accepted this challenge and the results were quite amazing!

Business deals are tough to make and even tougher to predict if they will work. One sure way to know when a business deal is good is if it is based on a win-win principle. Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People explains win-win principle quite well and here is a summary of it.

To most of Twitter users, it's obvious that you need a second screen to watch any sport or show on TV.  Half of the Super Bowl ads already contain #hashtags!

temple sadCognitive dissonance can be extremely painful.

The good news is that it often forces you to adapt or experiment to find the truth.

Some days I love email like melted butter on warm banana bread.
Other days I dislike it with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns.

It reminds me of the little girl with a curl on her head. When she was good, she was very very good, but when she was bad…she was horrid.

Today email is horrid.

Three days with the kids on my own prevented me from my usual habit of picking off emails over the weekend. This morning I am facing an inbox that I am not too proud to admit made me want to call for an adult.

Why must every week start by shoveling out an in-box?

What if you could give yourself a break from your email?

We are going to try it for just one day.

This Thursday October 3rd, 2013 will be the Look Matters #NoEmail challenge.

We may not last much of the day; but we are going to try to kill email…or at least cathartically cut it a bit. The Outbox is going to get it first.

Before it is an “In” in yours, it was an “Out” in someone else’s. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

If you were like me and 160 million other people around the world, you tuned into the Emmy Awards last night to see which television shows would be recognized with an award of excellence.

After two hours of frothing at the mouth in frustration watching Netflix original House of Cards draw blanks for their work, it finally happened: “And the award for Best Director of a Drama Series goes to…David Fincher, for House of Cards.”

If I had to choose only one thing I love about my business, it would be that I get exposed to so many entrepreneurs. I still remember the first time I met Brad McNaughton. He is married to a natural networker so Brad doesn't say much when you first meet him. However, once our conversation lead us to a discussion about healthy lifestyle, Brad's passion was very evident. It was that evening that he told me about his business dream. His dream included one thing I clearly remember, the sensory deprivation tank or float tank.
